Religion: The Confirmation

One of my close friends is a doctor and on one day we had an interesting chat regarding one status that I put on social media. This was during my early to mid 20s and by this time it's safe to say that I had started seeing myself as an agnostic if not an atheist. The status was something related to the wage revision of nurses and it was creating a lot of noise and protest during that time. For people of my age, I'm sure that this would have been a new information that nurses irrespective of how much important their role is, are getting paid way below par. This made me think and that realization of how much importance there is for such a job crept in. As they say, things happen for a reason, after seeing my status, my friend who is doctor said about the things that everyone in the medical field has to go through. Even though the post was about nurses being under paid, the discussion expanded to multiple facets like how normal people view medical professionals. Since my friend ...

Another Dimension

Dreams have always been a mystery to mankind. It is believed that dreams are a way by which the human brain tries to make sense with the data available around it. Freud, one the great minds to have studied about the topic, believes that dreams are a disguised fulfillment of a repressed wish. This might sound illogical at first but when we think about it, makes all the sense in the world. A nature of a dream largely depends on the mindset of the person before going into sleep. The same reason why a person gets nightmares after watching something horrific. Dreams, be it good or bad, everyone has experienced it irrespective of their gender, age, race, physical condition. I've always wondered what is the significance of a dream. A most common dream that almost all people would have experienced is free fall. In free fall, most often than not the person experiencing the same would eventually wake up just a moment before hitting the ground. If we think of it, in case of an actual fre...

Rational Insanity

Have you ever wondered what would happen if something that you use on a daily basis like a smartphone or a laptop had a mind on it's own and it tries to have a meaningful conversation with you ?. During those lonely nights, have you ever wanted your smartphone to have a mind and be able to communicate with you so that you can share your emotions with it, emotions such as how happy/frustrated/lonely/depressed you are. After all, we as humans have a natural instinct to live in groups and that is why we always find people living together rather than alone. There were even torture methods in modern world which involved isolating people from the surroundings and other living beings which eventually disturbed them mentally. At first, the whole idea of having a conversation with your smartphone might sound insane but when you think of it, doesn't it make perfect sense ?. A smartphone is something that you carry around with you all the time these days. There was a time when mobile phon...

Religion: The Turning Point

It was during my first year at college when it happened. I had a close group of 4 friends with whom I used to share most of my time. An interesting thing was that all 4 of us did not study together at any point in our lives but still this gang had that spark and that mindset I was comfortable with. Since all of us were born into Hindu families, we planned to go to Sabarimala  temple that year and to my surprise the guy who would prefer travelling over even sleeping said he would not join us if it was a religious trip as he would prefer trekking in the hills over it. I was surprised when he said he was an atheist and did not believe in a God, as for me everyone needed to have a religion and I have never met an atheist before. As this was an alien territory for me, I decided to explore the possibilities and started asking him more questions like why are you an atheist ? and why do you deny the existence of a God ? (I'm glad that I did this). I still remember his response as h...

Religion: The Peak

I was 11 then and I was excited that my final exams for the year were ending and the summer vacations would begin soon. Kids in India usually get a 2 month break during summer season and this would serve as a break between two academic years. This was the most colorful period of the year for all kids as summer meant countless hours of playing cricket (which is what all Indian kids did back in the 90s) and for Hindus, it was a season of yearly festivals with all the major temples in my home city. Since the city had plenty of temples, every block had a major temple which was having a 10 day festival during summer season. This year was more special for me as I had my upanayanam (a thread ceremony where a Brahmin boy starts to learn Vedas and he starts wearing the janeu ) done at the start of the year. My upanayanam was a great event. I had invited all my teachers at my school to the ceremony and to my surprise, all of them attended the ceremony and I was happy. I was wearing a tradit...

Religion: The Start

Religion, something that we have been hearing from a very young age, has fascinated me on how it influences even the greatest minds to have lived. I was born into an orthodox Hindu family down in the Southern part of India and hence religion was a major part of my life growing up. I grew up in a joint family until I was 11 years old and I was surrounded by a bunch of adults who were religious. From something as simple as getting a hair cut to something that happens only once in a while like buying a vehicle, everything was governed by religion, in other words by people who were religious. I guess it's nothing out of the ordinary for a kid growing up in the 90s in India to be surrounded by adults who are religious. By the time I started having sense about the surroundings, at about 3-4 years of age if I remember right, all the things in my life had a sense of spirituality that we usually see with Hinduism. It was sort of reward system where I have to do good deeds and God(s) (since ...
