Rational Insanity
Have you ever wondered what would happen if something that you use on a daily basis like a smartphone or a laptop had a mind on it's own and it tries to have a meaningful conversation with you ?. During those lonely nights, have you ever wanted your smartphone to have a mind and be able to communicate with you so that you can share your emotions with it, emotions such as how happy/frustrated/lonely/depressed you are. After all, we as humans have a natural instinct to live in groups and that is why we always find people living together rather than alone. There were even torture methods in modern world which involved isolating people from the surroundings and other living beings which eventually disturbed them mentally. At first, the whole idea of having a conversation with your smartphone might sound insane but when you think of it, doesn't it make perfect sense ?. A smartphone is something that you carry around with you all the time these days. There was a time when mobile phones were used when people went out of the house only and from there to here, it makes perfect sense if eventually we end up marrying our smartphones.
The story of a human being having a relationship with a smartphone was a dumb idea in the 90s, but with the invention of AI (Artificial Intelligence) , it is a very good possibility. This concept is beautifully illustrated by the relationship between Theodore Twombly, an introvert writer and Samantha, an AI based OS (operating system). The movie HER is a work of art and beautifully portrays how a lonely man who is depressed due to the break up of his past relation redeems himself with the help of an OS. Imagine yourself as Theodore Twombly in the movie, how would it feel to have meaningful conversations with something rather than someone. Would it feel like a real relationship or would the sense of materialism creep in and make us think that after all, it's just a gadget that we own?.
At times, does something like a smartphone feel that it is getting discriminated by us because we are just considering it as a gadget and not as an individual even though both us and the phone are made of matter and energy ?
